Tutor Spotlight – featuring Box
Healthy Cities Tutoring is partnering with volunteer tutors employed at Box in Redwood City for the third consecutive year. We are so grateful to the Boxers who give the gift of their time and fit tutoring once per week for 45 minutes into their busy workday.
We admire the Box corporate culture of social responsibility which reaches all the way to the top level. Box Co-Founder and CFO Dylan Smith tutored a student for the past two years. When asked why he wanted to volunteer, Dylan said, "I’ve always loved teaching, and the first business I ever started was tutoring middle school and high school students in math." His student’s mother has seen Dylan’s love of teaching and wrote, "I loved how my son and Dylan connected and the support he gave my son with his reading. My son has showed great improvement this year!"
Additionally, there is a team of four Box employees who carpool together during their lunch hour to volunteer at Connect Community Charter School in Redwood City. Two Boxers, Christina Louie and Emmeline Kim, are beginning their third year tutoring a brother and sister at Connect. They even tutored their students over the summer and took them on a tour of Box! After attending a Box Lunch and Learn with HCT last school year, Fadi Hindi volunteered to tutor a seventh grade boy and is continuing with him this school year. Lastly, their co-worker, Rosetta Phan, joins us this year and is tutoring a third grade boy.
We thank the Box employees and ALL of our 361 volunteers for their time, attention and encouragement to help their students grow and for giving back to our community.
If your company offers opportunities for employee volunteerism, we would welcome the chance to share information about Healthy Cities Tutoring and how to become involved.
